Funds of Rs. 16.25 crores are sanctioned for execution of Model Solar City Programme

              Chandigarh city is soon to be developed as solar city as Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), has financed the project, funds of Rs. 16.25 crores to Union Territory administration for execution of Model Solar City Programme.  MNRE has set up six rooftop solar photovoltaic power plants with power generation capacity of 975KW. The plan comprises to set up a 25 Mega Watts solar photo voltaic (PV).

The Energy Resources Institute had planned the project in 2009, but work could not commence, due to allocation of funds, the project was declared by Punjab Governor and Union Territory Administrator Shivraj Patil on August 16th 2012, now finally in March 2013 funds are allocated. For executing this plan UT administration needs to generate its now electricity.

According to pre-feasibility report, TERI, has identified 24 parks out of 900 small big parks which are being maintained by the Municipal Corporation, as most preferable location for generating solar power. They also thinking of need for more rooftop plants, for rooftop areas they recommend car parking areas as most suitable and effective areas for the project. The parking area of Sukhna Lake, Rock Garden, and the railway station are assumed to be most effective areas for setting up solar plant.
